Day 1: Conservatoire Cerdd

Today marked the opening of Conservatoire Cerdd. It was absolute delight to welcome new students from Ceredigion and Powys introducing to them and their parents what how new Conservatoire can enrich their musical lives.

Today was focussed mainly on students and teachers getting to know each other, followed exploratory sessions of music theory and a Harp workshop lead by Helen Naylor from Cambrian Harps.

Taking the time to learn the needs of each student is paramount in order to give a first class musical education. Learning music is a journey; no route is the same and education should be tailored to each individual.

The core foundation of music theory is knowledge that all musicians need to learn and unfortunately, one that is often missed out due to time constraints in instrumental or singing lessons. We plan to ensure that all of our students now only learn the theory of music, but also fully understand how it works.

Martin Ives, Head of Academic Music, lead an engaging and flexible session introducing music theory before we later split into groups based on knowledge for the later half of the school day. It is always a joy to see students realising that reading music is not at all difficult! Next week, we look forward to adding more elements to our usual programme which includes musicianship and choral singing.

The day was rounded off with a meet and greet for parents as well as a presentation by co-director and school bursar, Rob Chapman, detailing the aims, objectives and ethos of Conservatoire Cerdd and The Music School CIC as a whole.

I look forward to my role of Director and Head of Performance evolving as the school grows. We have plans for performance coaching and etiquette whilst woking towards our Christmas concert on 12th December. There are many rehearsals to look forward to before now and then!

An exciting time ahead. My huge and heartfelt thanks to all involved with Conservatoire Cerdd and The Music School CIC.
